In mid-summer August I travelled to Croatia for a week, flying into Split on the Adriatic Sea. I was amazed by this gateway city to the Pakleni Islands and cruise departures.

Split is steeped in ancient Roman history and is best experienced with a 1.5 hour walking tour. The 1700-year-old Diocletian Palace is at the centre and there are many accommodation options within the ancient stone walls.
Just an hour by ferry is the stunning island of Hvar, with its crystal-clear turquoise waters. The beaches are rocky or pebbly, and the water is exceptional. The sunsets are awesome.
Day cruises to the nearby Islands are a must although it is just as easy to catch a water taxi and explore each island on your own. We hired a beach lounge for the day for comfort on the island of Parmazol.
